Agriculture and rural development in the EU: What is the future?

A series of expert discussions sponsored by the British Embassy in Budapest, in collaboration with the Dutch and Swedish Embassies, the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Hungarian Agricultural Economics Reasearch Institute, and the President of the Hungarian LEADER Association.

One of the vital questions of the  European Union's fundamental budget review is how to promote a healthy, productive, environmentally friendly and economically efficient agricultural sector. When talking about the future of the Common Agricultural Policy the best way to explore options is collaborating efforts and exploring all arguments. The Budapest Discussions will give Hungarian and international opinion-formers and policy-makers the opportunity to highlight and debate the options which lay ahead for European agriculture, and to explore the possible ways in which the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy should develop over the coming 10-15 years.

First Discussion (16 November 2006)

"WHAT SHOULD NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS AND THE EUROPEAN UNION DO TO PROMOTE STRONG, SUSTAINABLE RUAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE EU?"

Second Discussion (24 January 2007)

“HOW TO SECURE A PROFITABLE FARMING SECTOR IN A CHANGING ECONOMY"

Purpose of discussion: to help define what sort of farms and farming industry are best able to thrive in Hungary and the rest of Europe and what the industry and Government need to do get there.

Third Discussion (March 2007)

“OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR EUROPEAN FARMING: WHAT KIND OF AGRICULTURE POLICY DOES EUROPE NEED”

Purpose of discussion: to consider issues such as energy crops, food security etc to demonstrate the new opportunities out there for EU farming to exploit.

Fourth Discussion (May 2007)

“THE WIDER IMPACT OF EUROPE’S AGRICULTURAL POLICIES. WHAT SHOULD BE THE DUTIES OF POLICY MAKERS?”
