British Embassy Bulletin by the Embassy Green Team

We proudly present the Green Team of the British Embassy, Budapest.

I have no rival

Take me to the future of new earth"
(Queen, Princes of the Universe)

Who we are

This little group was formed from some amateur but enthusiastic environmentalists at the Embassy in the late summer of 2006.

What we do

We mainly work for a greener office environment and to raise "green awareness" within the Embassy. We - the 5 of us - are managing the team's activities and we are very happy for the ideas and tips from all members of the staff. Their contributions become indispensable for our work. Not only the Embassy, but the Residence has joined our "campaign" as well.

One of our main goals is to collect and come up with ideas on how to respect our environment more and to share these among colleagues. Also, we would like to encourage them to think about nature not only at home but at work as well.

Our main achievements so far

  • With the help of Management Section we have introduced selective waste collection possibilities at the Embassy for paper, colour and white bottles, PETs, light bulbs, used neon lights, used batteries, used mobile phones, and electrical waste. These all are taken away separately to process.
  • We purchased a handy machine to press PETs, so we are now able to reduce their volume.
  • We created a user friendly, nicely illustrated Green Area at our Intranet available for all staff. This corner includes all relevant information on our work as well as news, useful ideas and tips on how to contribute to our initiatives, a list of useful websites, related articles and products, which help protect the environment.
  • Defra’s (UK Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) colourful posters are displayed around the embassy with tips on how to reduce our carbon footprints and on energy saving. See Act on CO2 website.

Some of our future plans

  • To purchase re-cycled A/4 papers for office use, mainly for copying, faxing, printing etc. We hope we will be able to reduce non-recycled paper usage.
  • Two of our colleagues travelled to Prague for training. They will brief us on the best practices applied there. We are also working on a monthly Green Newsletter to launch.
  • Quizzing colleagues will be not only a useful way to study the information sources listed above, but great fun for all as well, we hope.

Fighting for a greener environment

Do not miss the chance to watch the National Geographic Channel's special Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet based on the book of the Emerging Explorer Mark Lynas. The film explores the potential impact of climate change and shows, degree by degree, what may happen around the planet as global warming accelerates. 22 March at 8.00. The critical 6 degrees

This is how we work to make our work environment greener.

Should you have any comments, please do not hesitate to contact us. As we are not experts but keen on supporting this project, we await your helpful tips at info@britemb.hu

Thank you for your co-operation.
