Consular information for Sziget Festival goers

Sziget Festival

Most British visitors to the Sziget festival will enjoy a trouble-free stay in Hungary. Budapest is a welcoming and fun city. But sometimes things go wrong. Here is some practical advice on staying safe, secure and healthy at Sziget.

HMA Greg Dorey's consular information for Sziget visitors

Prepare

  • make sure your travel insurance is up to date and register with our LOCATE service
  • make sure you have enough money and don't rely on just one cash-card or credit-card. We won't be able to lend you money if you lose it
  • make a note of the contact numbers for the Embassy and the local police, just in case
  • make sure that someone at home knows where you are going to be staying and how to contact you
  • follow our "britishabroad" twitter channel for real-time updates and information.

When you get here

  • think about what you are doing, and trust your instincts - don't take risks that you would not take at home
  • keep your passport safe - don't leave it in your tent! Lost and stolen passports are the most common reason why visitors to Sziget need the Embassy's help. A passport is time consuming and expensive to replace
  • drug laws are strict, and strictly enforced. We can't get you out of prison
  • make sure you "validate" your bus and tram tickets - you will be fined if you don't
  • if it looks too good to be true, it probably is - be wary of bars recommended by taxi drivers and strangers; and always ask to see the price list before you order food or drink
  • avoid hailing taxis in the street - some drivers will over-charge tourists. Get a recommendation for a reliable dial-a-cab company from your guidebook. All of them have english-speaking operators
  • and please remember to drink lots of water and use sun-screen at the festival - it gets very hot in Budapest in mid-summer.

If things do go wrong

The emergency number for the police is 112. They also have an english-speaking hotline: +36 1 438 8989

The consular section of the British Embassy can provide a range of help if something goes wrong. We can issue you with a replacement or emergency passport to get you home; or get in contact with friends and family on your behalf if you run out of money. Check out the FCO website for more information on the services that we can (and can't) provide.

The Embassy is open from 9am to 12:30 pm Monday to Friday. The Embassy building is on the south west corner of Erzsebet ter (Elizabeth Square), close to the Deák Tér Metro station. Our telephone number is +36 1 266 2888

We will also have staff at the Sziget festival from 11 am to 7 pm each day. You can find us in the Civil Sziget zone, where we will be able to provide advice on what to do if you have a consular problem.
